The german consumers are increasing their preference to White Wine instead of Red Wine. Data released by German Wine Intitute (DWI) at the Prowein fair show that in 2017, 45 percent of the wines bought by the Germans were white, two percent more than the previous year. Still ten years ago, only 38 percent preferred the white wine. In the same period, sales of red wine fell from 53 percent to 46 percent. Rosé wine remains stable with nine percent of preferences.
DWI points to the trend towards a healthier diet as reasons for this habit changes: “White wines generally have less alcohol than reds, are lighter and more suitable for low-calorie food.” This trend is expected to continue in 2018 and white wines may, according to DWI, even supplant reds.
